First Time Ordering Out

My memory is coming back.  It's a little more clear.

Workout:  How can this be?  I hurt more today than I did on Saturday.  Hard to stand up from sitting position.  It's the left hip that hurts the most.  I don't remember falling and I don't have any bruises.

Breakfast:  2 slices of whole grain toast with Smart Balance Butter; Water

Lunch:  Salad - Spinach, Romaine, Iceburg; Cottage Cheese; Southwestern Chicken strips;  Water

Dinner:  Red Robin - Simply Chicken Sandwich - Grilled Chicken breast with lettuce, tomato (picked off) and pickles;  Steak Fries; Water

I did go online to look up nutrition value on the Red Robin website.  As soon as temptation wanted me to order a juicy burger, I remembered those 34 grams of saturated fat.  The chicken meal was under 10 grams of saturated fat.  A lot, I know.  But still better than a burger.

Today was rest, rest, rest.

A Blur

Thursday through today is a blur.  I'm writing this post on Monday.  I've had such a crazy week, but I'll try my best to remember things.

No workout today.  Next couple of days are going to be crazy.  Don't know when I'll be able to get there next.

Meals:  I have no idea.  I'm trying to be healthier, but I just can't remember.
I do know that I had my fish oil and fiber.

Dietician & Chain of Lakes Y: Upper Weights and Cardio

This  morning I had my appointment with the dietician.  I wanted to educated myself on how to read labels and make better choices.  The information she gave me was helpful.  It made sense at the time but now it's just a jumble in my head.  We went over how to read foods labels and using online tools to make better choices when ordering at restaurants.   It was more about looking at saturated fats.  To maintain or lower cholesterol, one should stay under 15 grams of saturated fat per day.

We went over this food journal and pointed out my flaws.  Too much cheese.  I'm a meat and potatoes....and cheese.  So I need to introduce more fruits and vegetables into my diet.  The fruit part is easy...all kinds of berries, apples, oranges, bananas.  Mix in a blender with yogurt and you have a delicious smoothie.  But vegetables....that's going to be hard.  I like salads and have opened up my palate to things besides Iceburg.  I can't do greens though...I feel like I'm eating weeds.   I like carrots and corn.  No broccoli (unless it's on a veggie pizza but I still pick it off) or celery or cauliflower or tomatoes.  I'll eat a veggie medley if someone else puts it on my plate and I'm super hungry....like at the Chanhassen Dinner Theater.  Those were some nummy zucchini's and red peppers.  I guess I'll be eating a lot more salads!!

It's also recommended that I start some supplements.  Omega 3 aka fish oil =  I don't like fish unless it's tuna.  But too much tuna is a bad thing too = mercury.  Big pills but I think I can handle it.
Metamucil = fiber.  Bring on the tooting!  This is going to take some getting used to.  It doesn't dissolve and it feels like I'm drinking sandy water.

So the plan is to make my diet a little more balanced and healthier, then reassess in 3 months.  Fingers crossed that the cholesterol levels will be better.

Today I had a lab appointment to get some blood drawn and that meant doing a 12 hour fast.  But I actually did it from 6pm Sunday night until 9:30 this morning.  I was pretty hungry so I made myself french toast.  I haven't had that in forever....yum!

It was a good thing I didn't have alcohol yesterday at the Lyric Theater or at Courtside.  I almost bought a little something at both places.  I wasn't told to NOT consume alcohol for 72 hours prior to my appointment.  I didn't see that until I pulled my appointment card out of my pocket AFTER my appointment.  Phew!

Indecisiveness

Today my rotation has me doing Lower Body Weights and Cardio.  And because I'm not working today I should be going to Gold's Gym because it's the closer.  Both Y's are quite a drive away and I prefer to save some gas for the weekday commute.  But I'm not doing a workout today.

I've mentioned this to other people but Gold's Gym in UNMOTIVATING!  The people that go there have ginormous muscles.  They all RUN on treadmills.  I feel like I'm the only walker.  I feel uncomfortable doing the weight machines here because everyone does free weights.  And like hell am I going to set foot next to a muscle-head by the drumbells.  And they are all TAN.  Like super tan!

Sidenote: I have used their beds a couple of times lately.  I am going to Arizona in January and I don't want to look like a stereotypical Midwesterner.

I love the Y!  Because you will find people of all shapes and sizes.  EVERYDAY PEOPLE!  And I love the equipment.  It's all new, state-of-the art stuff.  Each and every treadmill has a TV built into the programming screen.  And half of the elliptical's have a TV too.  And I have just discovered a new biking machine...THE OCTANE!  It's a seated elliptical that also allows you to work just your legs, just your arms, or both together.

So my dilemma....I prefer to workout at the Y.  But I've already spent a lot of $$ joining Gold's.  With my health insurance, it's free if I go 12 times a month.  Do I continue to workout there half-heartedly?  Or do I cancel my membership and only go were I feel a connection.

I don't know yet.  If only Gold's had BodyVive; I think I would stick it out a little longer then.

Rebooting Julie

I'm going to try this again.  Writing down my workouts and keeping a food diary.
I haven't stopped working out.  I'm just lazy with writing down my thoughts on the computer for all to see.
I still keep a calendar of the days I work out but I haven't kept up with my food journal.

I could say starting this again is all self-motivation but that's not all true.  I have an appointment with a dietician in a couple of weeks and I need to keep a log of my workouts and what I eat.  And that's exactly what my intention was originally.  So here we go again.

I lost 10+ lbs last time, but I gained it all back.  I'm gonna give it another go.
And another incentive/goal.....two of my co-workers invited me to join them to do the Warrior Dash.
It's a 5K Obstacle course.  Heaven help me...I need to get into shape.  Build some muscle and endurance.
It sounds like fun...and hell.

Am I nuts....rappel down a ravine, climb over a wooden wall, climb a waterfall, jump over fire!  I didn't know what I was getting myself into.  They fooled me!

No workout today.

Breakfast: 2 slices kesh

Day 72

Can't recall what I ate today as I am actually writing this on Friday.

But I do remember that I went for a bike ride today.  I was going to meet up with a friend at Bunker Hills but she canceled on me.  So instead I took residential back-roads to Pioneer Park.  It took about 40 minutes and was about 5 miles all together.

***We purchased my sister's bike today.  It was on sale and we ended up having to drive to Maple Grove because the Coon Rapids store was sold out.  It wasn't too expensive, yet will serve it's purpose for riding the trails.  The only problem is that the frame is made of steel, not aluminum like mine.  I can't lift the dang thing, so I don't know how I'm going to be able to raise it over my head to get it to hang from the ceiling.  I'm just going to have to do more weight training I guess. ***

***Think I'm going to pass on signing up for Personal Training for now.  If only there wasn't a 12 month contract. My thighs are so sore that it's hard to walk down steps or bend over to pick things up off the ground.  And if I'm going to be playing softball this summer, playing catcher will be a little difficult.  Just walking on the treadmill today I was stumbling because sometimes my legs wouldn't move.  Running would be a little more tricky.  And if I'm getting a bike, my legs will be getting a workout pedaling around town.***

Weights: Rest Day

**This morning was my consult with a personal trainer, Ryan.  It was supposed to include a fitness assessment but I've already had that done at Andover back in February.  So instead he tested by body fat and BMI.  The result were not a huge surprise...they were too high.  Ryan did say that BMI's aren't always accurate (Adrienne Peterson has a high BMI....because he's all muscle) and to pay more attention to your body fat percentage.

He then went over my workout routine.  He doesn't like it.....machines are inefficient on burning tons of calories.  He took me away from the machines and over to the free weight area....SCARY!  I was out of my element.  He made me do squats, squats with bicep curls, squats with bicep curls and then turn it into a shoulder press.  Then he made me do a pull down (sitting down) and then a pull down while squatting.  Then he put me on an overturned bosu ball and made me do squats.  I HATE squats.  I have no balance.  I was stumbling and shaking all over the place.  (And just now when I was coming downstairs from the shower, I almost fell down the stairs....legs are complete noodles.)

Ryan is really pushing me to do personal training because I have no balance = no muscle strength.  I've thought about doing personal training for a while now, since all Member Services staff had to do a fitness consultation at the Y back in February.  The biggest factor of not following through is $$$.  It's so expensive and it's a one year agreement.

And now I'm more confused than ever.  I broke more of sweat in 15 minutes with Ryan than the last 48 days of doing weights all by myself.  My asthma finally showed up.  This might sound bad, but I feel like I'm accomplishing something when I can't breath and I'm huffing and puffing.  It makes me feel good because I'm off the couch and being active.

If I go through with personal training, I'm thinking of only doing it once a week.  It'll be cheaper than say 3 or 4 days a week.  And if I have homework for the other 6 days, I can be accountable for myself.  I need to make this decision myself and not feel like I'm being pressured into it because Ryan wants to make a sale.  Making a decision to please someone else will only make me regret signing up for personal training.  It has to be for me!

Another Membership

I work at the Y and one of the perks of being an employee is that I get a free membership.  I've been there over 5 years and haven't really taken advantage of it until now.  But driving 20 minutes one way is getting old and with gas prices going up, it's not looking pretty on my wallet either.

In January I did a free 7 day trial pass to Snap Fitness.  I only went twice.  It smelled funny...it was next to a dry cleaners and a BBQ joint.  And it was dirty...very dirty.  Also in January I  put myself on the mailing lists of Anytime Fitness and Gold's Gym but never did anything besides that.

Last week I was going to clean up my SPAM folder and and email from Gold's Gym caught my eye.  I opened it and found that it was for a free 7 day trial.  I thought I would take advantage of it and to see what else is out there for future reference.  I won't always work at the Y.

So today was my first day of my trial pass.  It's not really a facility for families, more for individuals.  It looks a little intimidating from the outside but it's quite nice on the inside.  It's spacious, has tons of equipment, 3 studios and tanning beds.  The downside: It's dark...poor lighting for reading and it's hot....no fans for air circulation and body temperature cooling.  The pool isn't the greatest either (no water sliders?!  Oh the horror!) but I don't plan on using it....no lifeguards!  Help me...I can't swim!

The part that I LOVE!!!!....is the women's locker room.   The shower's are designed to be separate of the changing area which makes it a little more private...which is  nice.  The changing areas have little nooks too...which is good if you don't want to get undressed in front of a bunch of people.  You can hide out in a corner.  Think of a long aisle with little aisles coming off of it...like an "E".  And there is a separate "Women's Only" workout area.  You can get to it from the main workout area through a glass door, but then there is a giant archway from the Women's Locker Room.  It's much more quiet in there.  I can see the benefits of it and I might use it for some weight training.

Speaking of weights, they have the exact same equipment as Andover with the exception of the Leg Curl.  I'm gonna have to lay on my stomach and bend my knees to pull my legs UP towards my butt.  I'm not looking forward to that one.  As far as cardio goes, similar but not exact.  The treadmills feel more narrow.  I feel like I'm going to stumble because I catch the side of the conveyor belt.

I'm going to workout there again tomorrow and I might sign up for a membership.  With my health insurance qualifying for the Frequent Fitness Discount, it will be FREE after the first two months of membership.  With tax, it'll be under $2 a month.  That's less than the gas it'll take me to drive the 20 minutes to Andover or Lino Lakes.  I'm kind of excited to have a place that's 5 BLOCKS away from me.  I could WALK or BIKE instead of using my precious GAS!

Day 32

So this is the first day after my 31-day Challenge.  I'm hoping to keep the momentum going.  I intend to keep this blog as more of a journal but maybe I'll include some healthy recipes every once in a while.  I just subscribed to "Everyday with Rachel Ray" and "Cooking Light" this week.  The neighbor girl had a magazine fundraiser and I thought it was a perfect opportunity to learn how to make new leaner meals.

I also now have my very own scale that I have placed in my bathroom.  I won't have to rely on different scales at the Y were I never get the same readings.  I will track my progress with the new scale to make sure of consistency and accuracy.

Breakfast:  Special K Chocolaty Delight cereal; 2% Milk
Lunch:  Tuna on Wheat Bread; Doritos; Water
Dinner: North Alaskan Cod Filet Sandwich (Culver's); French Fries; Mint Oreo Concrete Mixer; Water
